Prince William Visits South Africa
CAPE TOWN, South Africa — Prince William is currently visiting South Africa to meet with young environmentalists and local fishermen. His trip, which started on Monday, aims to raise awareness about climate change and conservation efforts. One of the highlights of his visit will be the Earthshot Prize awards ceremony, where he will award $1.2 million in grants to five organizations that have come up with innovative environmental solutions.
During his four-day visit, the 42-year-old prince will also attend a global wildlife summit and spend time at a sea rescue institute. He plans to highlight important issues such as the work of rangers who protect wildlife and the environment.
This visit comes amid scrutiny of the finances of Prince William and his father, King Charles III. An investigation revealed that their private estates have made millions by renting properties to government organizations, including the armed forces and public schools. Both estates claim they focus on environmental restoration and positive social impacts.
Prince William has a strong connection to Africa. He visited the continent as a boy after his mother, Princess Diana, passed away in 1997. He also proposed to his wife, Kate, at a wildlife conservancy in Kenya in 2010 and came up with the idea for the Earthshot Prize while in Namibia in 2018.
In a statement, William shared, “Africa has always held a special place in my heart as somewhere I found comfort as a teenager, where I proposed to my wife, and most recently, as the founding inspiration behind the Earthshot Prize.”
While Prince William is in South Africa, Kate, the Princess of Wales, and their children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—are not accompanying him. Kate has recently returned to her public duties after treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
William’s trip follows a visit by his brother Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who was in South Africa and Lesotho last month for a youth charity project.
The Earthshot Prize, launched by William in 2020, aims to encourage new ideas to address environmental issues. This year’s awards focus on inspiring young people in Africa, a continent of about 1.5 billion people that is less responsible for climate change but is greatly affected by it. The region is currently facing severe drought and hunger, impacting 27 million people, according to the United Nations.
The Earthshot Prizes are awarded in five categories: protecting nature, clean air, reviving oceans, building a waste-free world, and fixing climate issues. This year’s finalists include a company from Kenya that creates solar-powered systems for homes, a group in Ecuador that works to protect forests, and a conservation project in Kazakhstan that aims to save the critically endangered Saiga antelope.
The awards ceremony will take place in a special temporary dome set up next to a sports stadium in Cape Town. The dome is reusable and will be taken down after the event.
In addition to focusing on environmental issues, Prince William will visit a high school in a less privileged area of Cape Town, where he is expected to join students for a rugby practice. Rugby is a very popular sport in South Africa, and the national team, the Springboks, are the current world champions. A spokesperson from Kensington Palace mentioned, “You will see the Prince of Wales playing some rugby.”
