AIG Hospitals Launches Barry Marshall Centre
AIG Hospitals in Hyderabad has launched the Barry Marshall Centre for H. Pylori Research, marking the first dedicated facility in India focused on the study and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infections. Located at the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) Hospitals in Hitec City, the center aims to address the high prevalence of H. Pylori infections in India and reduce associated health risks, including stomach cancer.
Named in honor of Nobel laureate Barry Marshall, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2005 for discovering the link between H. Pylori and peptic ulcers, the center will work to develop a healthcare model that emphasizes both treatment and prevention of H. Pylori infections. This innovative model is intended to reduce infection rates and ultimately lower the incidence of stomach cancer nationwide.
During the inauguration, Professor Marshall highlighted the significance of targeted research in India, where H. Pylori strains exhibit unique genetic characteristics. This makes customized research into infection patterns and treatment responses essential for effective medical intervention. Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman and Chief of Gastroenterology at AIG Hospitals, also emphasized the need for region-specific strategies, given that around 50-60% of India’s population is infected with H. Pylori—nearly ten times the national diabetes rate. H. Pylori infections remain a major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and stomach cancer in the country.
The Barry Marshall Centre’s goals include educating the public on H. Pylori risks, promoting early testing, and supporting treatment adherence to curb infection rates. By targeting public awareness and preventive care, the center hopes to achieve a significant reduction in both H. Pylori prevalence and stomach cancer cases.
Professor Marshall is also set to deliver the prestigious Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy Endowment Oration on Saturday, where he will discuss his groundbreaking journey in discovering H. Pylori. His talk will take place at the 8th Annual Conference of the IMA Telangana Chapter, hosted at AIG Hospitals by IMA Hyderabad North and the IMA-AIG Chapters.
