Army Officer Killed
In a tragic development, an Army officer killed, and three soldiers were injured during a fierce gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. The fallen officer, Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Naib Subedar Rakesh Kumar of the 2 Para (SF) unit, was leading a joint counter-terror operation launched by the Army and police on Saturday in the rugged Bhart Ridge area.
The Army’s 16 Corps confirmed the news in a post on X (formerly Twitter), mourning the loss of Naib Subedar Kumar, who died while bravely defending against terrorist forces. The operation was part of an intensified effort to counter terrorist activities in the region, particularly following the recent killing of two Village Defence Guards (VDGs), Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar, whose bodies were found with bullet wounds nearby.
The encounter began around 11 a.m. when joint search teams of the Army and police intercepted a group of terrorists hiding in a forested area just a few kilometers from the site of the VDGs’ deaths. The encounter quickly escalated as the terrorists opened fire, leading to a prolonged gun battle. Naib Subedar Kumar sustained fatal injuries in the exchange, while three soldiers were injured and immediately evacuated for medical treatment. Their conditions are reported to be stable.
The Army has hailed Naib Subedar Kumar’s courage, describing his sacrifice as an embodiment of the dedication and resilience that characterize India’s armed forces. The security forces continue to secure the area, with ongoing efforts to eliminate remaining terrorist threats and prevent further violence.
This operation underscores the continued volatility and security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, where encounters with militants frequently pose significant risks to security personnel. Despite these dangers, the Army remains resolute in its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
