Japanese Ship from Waters
China’s coast guard announced on Thursday, October 17, 2024, that it had expelled a Japanese fishing vessel from waters surrounding the disputed Diaoyu Islands, which are administered by Japan as the Senkaku Islands. The incident is the latest in an ongoing series of confrontations between Beijing and Tokyo over the uninhabited islands in the East China Sea, believed to hold undersea oil and gas reserves.

According to a statement from the Chinese coast guard, the Japanese vessel was warned and expelled after “illegally” entering what China considers its territorial waters around the islands between October 15 and 16. Beijing urged Japan to “immediately stop all illegal activities in these waters,” further highlighting the fragile relations over the disputed area.
Japan has not yet issued an official response to this incident, but the two nations have faced multiple confrontations in recent months. In April, Chinese authorities criticized Japanese lawmakers for an inspection visit to the islands, labeling it an act of “infringement and provocation.” In June, Japan protested against the presence of Chinese vessels equipped with what appeared to be cannons within its claimed territorial waters.
The Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands have long been a flashpoint in Sino-Japanese relations, with both countries asserting territorial claims. This dispute is part of China’s broader regional ambitions, which include expansive claims in the South China Sea and increasing military activity near Taiwan.
