Jharkhand Elections 2024
The first phase of the Jharkhand Elections 2024 commenced on November 13, with voter turnout reaching nearly 13.04% by 9 a.m. Voting is set to continue at 950 polling booths until 4 p.m., allowing all voters in line by that time to cast their ballots.
This initial phase covers 43 of the 81 Assembly constituencies in Jharkhand, while the remaining constituencies will vote on November 20. Key battlegrounds include Seraikella, Ranchi, Jamshedpur West, Jaganathpur, and Jamshedpur East, where significant contests are anticipated.
Former Chief Minister and BJP candidate Champai Soren is running for the Seraikella seat, while Jamshedpur East features a high-profile contest between Congress candidate Ajoy Kumar, a former Jamshedpur SP, and Purnima Das Sahu, the daughter-in-law of ex-Jharkhand Chief Minister and current Odisha Governor Raghubar Das.
Campaigning for the first phase concluded on November 11, 2024. The BJP alleged that the JMM-led coalition government was permitting “Bangladeshi infiltrators” into the state, influencing the demographic composition in tribal regions—a claim the INDIA bloc denied. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, meanwhile, emphasized the need for a caste census, making it a focal issue in this year’s Jharkhand Elections 2024.
