Maharashtra Assembly Election
The Election Commission unveiled the timetable for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election on Tuesday. Voting will take place in a single phase on November 20, with results scheduled to be declared on November 23.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar explained the decision to hold the Maharashtra assembly election mid-week. “It was a conscious choice to schedule the election on a Wednesday, aiming to tackle urban apathy by encouraging higher voter turnout,” he said.
The official timeline begins with the notification on October 22, followed by the nomination deadline on October 29. Scrutiny will be conducted on October 30, with candidates allowed to withdraw until November 4. The crucial voting day is set for November 20, and counting of votes will occur on November 23.
Additionally, the Election Commission announced that Jharkhand will also hold its elections in two phases on November 13 and November 20, with both states’ results to be declared simultaneously on November 23.
Rajiv Kumar noted, “Maharashtra has 9.63 crore eligible voters, while Jharkhand has 2.6 crore eligible voters.”
In Maharashtra, political heavyweights like the BJP, led by Eknath Shinde, and the NCP, headed by Ajit Pawar, are keen to retain power. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, comprising Congress, the Shiv Sena (UBT), and the NCP (SP), aims to make a comeback. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the MVA alliance won 31 out of the 48 seats in Maharashtra.
In Jharkhand, the Congress is partnering with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, in their fight for control of the state.
With the stage set, all eyes are on the upcoming Maharashtra assembly election and its potential impact on the political landscape.
