waterlogging in Bengaluru
Bengaluru experienced severe waterlogging in Bengaluru on October 21, following continuous heavy rainfall, leading to widespread disruptions, including a holiday for schools and anganwadis across the Bengaluru Urban district. The Karnataka government declared the closure as a precautionary measure for student safety after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the region.
Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh made the decision urgently after receiving the orange alert, which warned of heavy rain and thunderstorms. “Due to continuous rain in Bengaluru Urban district, a holiday has been declared on October 21 for all anganwadi centers, as well as private and aided primary and high schools,” the official statement said. Bengaluru recorded 62 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours leading up to 8:30 a.m. on October 21, according to the IMD.
However, the late announcement caused confusion among parents and students as many school buses had already begun their routes. Some private schools shifted to online classes, while parents voiced frustration. “Very bad management from both government and schools. All kids went to school, now came back,” shared Shwetha H, a parent, on X. State officials clarified that they received the IMD alert at 6:45 a.m., prompting the last-minute decision to declare a verbal holiday.
In addition to school closures, the heavy rainfall led to significant waterlogging in Bengaluru, especially in key tech corridors like Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road, as well as other areas like Bannerghatta Road, Jayanagar, Hosur Road, and Madiwala. Several underpasses witnessed flooding, and motorists were urged to take alternate routes due to severe waterlogging in Bengaluru, including at the Panathur railway underpass.
Authorities also instructed schools and colleges to prioritize student safety by inspecting buildings and advising students to avoid low-lying areas. To make up for lost time, extra classes will be scheduled on weekends.
Despite increasing calls for work-from-home arrangements for tech employees, the state government has not issued an official advisory. Meanwhile, the IMD’s orange alert remains in effect, warning of more rain and potential waterlogging in Bengaluru in the coming hours.
